The New Bethel Youth Group hosted a Valentine's Day pancake breakfast and silent auction at the church on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012. Some of the items for auction included bird houses, scripture plaques, and baked goods. Thank you to all who made the day such a success!

Ding-a-Lings!

New Bethel has a new choir chimes group - the Ding-a-Lings, led by Sally, on the far right. The Ding-a-Lings performed "For the Beauty of the Earth" during our worship service on Jan. 29, 2012. The music was heavenly!

Angel Tree

New Bethel was pleased to participate in the "Angel Tree" endeavor at Pathways Elementary School this Christmas season. Three church groups provided funding for purchasing gifts for 17 angels from the Pathways tree. The children ranged in age from 2 to 11 years old. Items purchased included:

Socks and underwear for 4 children
1 pair of shoes
4 winter coats
Jeans, shirts, and hoodies for 4 children
1 case of diapers
GoGo My Walking Dog
BatMan Cave playset
Moxie Girls Riding Club Horse and Doll

The 2011 Christmas worship schedule for the Rougemont Charge (New Bethel, Rougemont, and Union Grove UMCs) is as follows:

Saturday, Dec. 24, 5 p.m.: A candlelight Christmas Eve worship service will be held at Rougemont UMC, corner of Hwy. 501 North and Red Mountain Road, in Rougemont.

Sunday, Dec. 25, 11 a.m.: Christmas Day worship service will be held at New Bethel. No Sunday school on Christmas, but children are invited to bring a toy they received, for a blessing of the children and toys.

ALL ARE INVITED!!!

Rougemont and Union Grove will not hold Christmas Day worship services.

Christmas Program

New Bethel's Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, was awesome! The evening began with a live nativity outside... hey, are those real donkeys? Yes! The Christmas program featured singing by the children's choir and various adult soloists, liturgical dance by the Youth, music by the Ding-a-Lings choir chimes group, scripture readings by children and Youth, and congregational singing. The program was followed by a delicious covered-dish dinner. Thanks to all who made the evening so wonderful.

Women's Spiritual Retreat

The New Bethel Women's Spiritual Retreat the weekend of Nov. 4-6, 2011, in Camden, NC, was wonderful! Many thanks to our retreat leader, Mrs. Lynn Trogdon of Chapel Hill. Our theme was "Come Rest by the River." Do we look rested and refreshed?

Halloween Fun

New Bethel's Halloween party was Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. Children and grown-ups enjoyed a covered-dish dinner, and then everyone watched a UNICEF video. The kids made Halloween crafts and went "trunk-or-treating" oustide. New Bethel children will be trick-or-treating for UNICEF this year. Brrrr - it was cold, windy, and spooky outside but warm and wonderful inside!

Fall Bazaar and Dinner

New Bethel's annual fall bazaar and dinner was held Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011. Proceeds benefit New Bethel's United Methodist Women's projects, including a college scholarship. Kittens were part of the fun!

The Rougemont Charge welcomes Laura-Allen Kerlin, our new ministerial intern for the academic year. Her first Sunday will be Sept. 25, 2011. Laura-Allen is a United Methodist from Louisiana; she has degrees from Clemson, and is a second-year student at Duke Divinity. She plans to be a pastor in South Carolina when she completes her masters of divinity. Welcome, Laura-Allen!

News from South Africa

Hello Rougemont Charge,

I have been in South Africa for two weeks, and it has been a great experience. I visited the new Methodist seminary in Pietermaritzburg for two days and then traveled to Durban to the Manning Road Methodist Church where I will complete the internship.

Durban is a beautiful city on the coast of the Indian Ocean. I am surprised that it is a city with steep hills, and it reminds me of San Francisco. The Synod of the Methodist Churches of Southern Africa was occurring in Durban when we arrived, so we sat in on these annual sessions.

The pastor of Manning Road Church ran an ultra-marathon on Sunday, and the assistant was busy with Synod assignments in other churches, and the guest minister became ill, so I was called on to preach the 7:30 a.m. traditional service and the 6 p.m. contemporary service at Manning Road the Sunday I arrived! It went well.

At Manning Road, I will be sitting in with small groups, working to bring their Zulu congregation more into connection with the rest of the congregations. I also will be developing connections with faith and community groups in the neighborhood, and visiting home-bound elderly members.

The Rougemont Charge bids farewell and God bless to Dewey and Lynne Williams. Dewey has been our Duke Divinity ministerial intern for the past year; he has blessed us with his sweet presence and stellar preaching, and he and Lynne have blessed us with their singing (and Lynne's piano playing). The Rougemont Charge honored them and their family with a luncheon on April 25 at New Bethel. Dewey departs for his summer field education placement in South Africa on May 24. He will keep us updated on his adventures, which will be posted right here.

On Good Friday, April 2, at 7 p.m., there will be a showing of the acclaimed movie, "The Passion of the Christ," at New Bethel, in the sanctuary. The movie lasts 2 hours, 6 minutes. A discussion will follow the movie for those who wish to stay awhile longer. Everyone is invited (Note: the movie is rated "R" for violence).

Maundy Thursday

New Bethel will host the Rougemont Charge's Maundy Thursday worship service on April 1 at 7 p.m. Pastor Cheryl and Dewey Williams will present a brief meditation written by former South African bishop Peter Storey. The New Bethel choir will sing, and Paul McFarland will play the guitar and sing a solo. Holy Communion will be a part of this special service. A charge-wide dinner will be held at 6:15 p.m. in the fellowship hall. All are invited.

I give because God gave first.

I give because I believe that all I have and all I am are gifts from God. My family, my health, my home, my abilities, my job, my possessions, even my faith, are all gifts from God.
I give because Jesus Christ and our salvation are the greatest gifts of all, and I am grateful!

I give to New Bethel because I enjoy seeing the results of my generosity. I know that my giving makes a difference.

I give because I see our children growing, singing, playing, and learning in church.
I give because the worship at New Bethel touches me in a special way.

This Sunday, March 7, is the third Sunday in Lent.

Worship is at 11 a.m., and Sunday school for children and adults is at 10 a.m. Our newest Sunday school class for adults gathers in the youth room (first door on the left as you enter across from the sanctuary) and is studying the Gospel of Matthew. Another class for adults class is right across the hall and is immersed in the Cokesbury adult study. All are welcome in all our classes.

New Bethel will celebrate Holy Communion during worship this Sunday. Our Duke intern, Dewey Williams, will preach from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. Please join us!
